The Program

The Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence (OUSD(I)) will provide policy support and actions necessary to enable the submission and expedited completion of clearances for this program. The individual component WWPs will develop the selection criteria necessary to implement the program. The Wounded Warrior Security and Intelligence Internship Program (WWSIIP) has two principal components:

Internships

While the wounded warrior is convalescing at a military treatment facility in proximity to the DoD agency offering an internship, the component WWP representative may refer wounded warriors for internships at the appropriate location. The conclusion date is driven by their release from service date, established by the Services. This internship will allow the wounded warrior to secure clearances, develop job skills and gain valuable federal government work experience that will help them prepare for future employment. Simultaneously, these internships enable DoD agencies and elements to avail themselves of a talent pool with unique competencies and experiences. The medical treatment facility, the internship agency, and the component WWPs will vet those interested in the program to match skills and expertise with host agency requirements. The sponsoring agency will fund qualified service members for Top Secret/SCI eligibility as required. If the sponsoring agency does not have funds available, the owning military service may choose to fund the investigation. It is the responsibility of the individual service members to complete and return all required paperwork. WWSIIP will conclude when the intern is either returned to active duty, discharged, or at the request of the host agency. Whenever separated from service, the WWSIIP intern will have primary responsibility for securing his/her own permanent employment. Host agencies may extend an offer of permanent employment to any WWSIIP intern separating from service using the appropriate direct hire authorities. However, host agencies and elements are not compelled to permanently hire WWSIIP interns nor are the interns required to serve any DoD agency or element following the termination of the program.

Permanent Employment

DoD components are strongly encouraged to consider WWSIIP participants for permanent employment opportunities upon discharge from the military service. Defense Industry partners are also welcome to seek out and offer participants permanent employment.
